Artist Statement:

I am an interdisciplinary artist working primarily in video, sculpture and performance. My work revolves around the incongruities of the physical and the metaphysical. Like Kierkegaard, I am interested in the absurdity of faith and faith based actions. I explore the vast depth of faith beyond just religious faith into what I consider realms of faith that are taken for granted; for example faith that mud on a canvas can depict something other than mud on a canvas.

I use a variety of materials in a process that can only be described as tinkering. I make very intuitive decisions in the studio that explore the limitations of materials while seeking a new voice in them. Like the man in Annie Dillard’s essay, I try to teach stones to talk.

The work is often ephemeral or process driven which allows me to rely on documentation in order that the work is given a context. I think of the documentation as a method of adding to a performance so that it becomes integral to the work. I use documentation as a way to elicit meaning from a performance or relic by giving the viewer a context or framework from which to view the work.

I seek to lead a vocational life as an artist doing whatever it takes to continue engaging in the art world and making art. I also hope to pass on my skills and knowledge through becoming an educator.
